DIY Paper Towel Roll Art
Tonight I finally finished one of my longest ongoing DIY projects. My longest project I can’t, unfortunately, take a picture of because I don’t actually have it anymore. It was a Cinderella crosstitch project begun in 1998 for my then 7 year old sister. I only just finished it last month. I gave it to her for her 20th birthday. HAH!
But I digress.
So this project I finished tonight is not something I came up with on my own; it’s something I found over a year ago at Design Sponge in their DIY archives – a toilet paper roll wall art tutorial. At that time, we had just moved into our house and we were planning a house warming (which, incidentally, I still have not sent thank you cards for… just about a year later since it happened. I’m so bad about that!) and needing to get our house looking mostly decorated before all our friends and family came over.
I had a huge list of DIY tutorials from DS that I wanted to accomplish and I was able to get to most of them, except for this one. I told my family to start collecting toilet paper and paper towel rolls for me so I could finish the project in time. And they totally obliged – in fact, I ended up with probably close to 100 rolls. So it wasn’t a supplies issue… I don’t even really know why I didn’t finish it. I just didn’t.
Over the months, all the rolls and the pieces I had started to cut out got put into plastic shopping bags and shoved on the top shelf of our guest bedroom closet – out of sight, out of mind! That is, until tonight.
The DIY spirit overtook me and I finished this project. And I don’t know why I didn’t finish it sooner – it was so quick and easy.
I didn’t actually follow the directions in the DS tutorial. I did, however, follow their design in the sample image. I don’t have step-by-step pictures (I was too caught up in the moment!) but here are some bullet points for what I did:
- Cut up a paper towel roll into about 10 equal sections, each about 1/2″ wide (maybe slightly smaller). Use one of the sections as your guide for all future paper towel roll/toilet paper tube cutting. Cut up about 6 or 7 tubes so you have a good starting base
- Heat up your glue gun while cutting up the rolls/tubes
- Lay out 5-6 sections in a good starting design and glue them together with the hot glue
- Let it loose and finish up your design!
Some remaining things I’m going to do before hanging it are:
- Possibly spray paint it another color
- Figure out where to hang it… Unfortunately, I can imagine it going in every room of my house
Here’s my finished product:
I’m sorry for the mediocre shot of this – I took it with my iPhone at like 9:30PM and the iPhone really only works best for picture-taking in the daylight. But you get the general idea.
All in all, I’m pretty pleased! Too bad I didn’t have this done a year ago, but oh well. What room of your house would you hang something like this?
