Week 8
Budget – $70.00
Actual – $36.50

Week 9
Budget – $70.00
Actual – $73.49

So, week 8 our spending was drastically down because I was sick most of the week. The day I would normally have gone grocery shopping, I started getting a fever. By the time Wednesday rolled around, I was completely done and had no appetite anyway. Alex ate leftovers and my parents also brought food by the house. The grocery spending that week is spending at Kroger, Walmart and Walgreens for kleenex, soup, popsicles and Tylenol.

For this week, week 9, we went to the store but we had no list (mistake #1!). We did our shopping on Sunday night (mistake #2!) and I still wasn’t feeling 100% so we just grabbed things we might normally buy and hoped for the best (mistake #3!). Needless to say, this week has been rather interesting in terms of meal planing. It’s been all over the place, actually. I repeated a few recipes that I already knew were easy and in between then we’ve been eating with my family as I get my energy back.

Here’s what our meals look like this week:

Wednesday (03/07) – Alex had Easy Crockpot Chicken leftovers, and I had Applebees with my mom at a vendor show I attended
Thursday (03/08) – Panera with family.
Friday (03/09) – Out with friends for my birthday.
Saturday (03/10) – Out with family. This is my birthday!!
Sunday (03/11)-Tuesday (03/13) – No plan. We have a few frozen leftover meals, plus some chicken in the freezer. We also might do breakfast for dinner one night.

Unfortunately, getting sick really, really messed up my groove. With no meal plan, we spend a lot of money we shouldn’t be spending – not only on groceries, but on dinners because there’s no plan, and on lunch for me because I have nothing to eat at home. It’s just not good. I’m ready for this week to be over so I can get back on track again.

So that’s my bummer of an update. Check out to see how the other participating blogs have done this week:

I feel like this was the week of rushed grocery shopping, grab-and-go style! I went $20 over because this that and the other thing “looked” good. At least it forced me to get creative in the kitchen (tonight’s dinner: quinoa/corn/diced green chiles/chickpeas smothered in diavlo sauce and topped w/ crumbled veggie burger).

I hate going over budget! Good for you on getting creative, though – that sounds delicious. Sometimes the most random concoctions become favorite recipes.
